Our History
Seventy years in the making.
From the post-war shopping center boom to the mixed-use marketplaces of today, the industry has changed every decade — and ICSC has helped lead it through each one.
- 1957
ICSC founded
Established as the International Council of Shopping Centers — a coalition of mall developers and retailers shaping the post-war retail landscape.
- 1975
Foundation chartered
ICSC Foundation incorporated as a 501(c)(3) to invest in education and research for the industry.
- 1999
First international congress
Expanded beyond North America, formalizing chapters across Europe, Asia, and Latin America.
- 2010
Talent Incubator launched
A coordinated scholarship + mentorship + internship program designed so a student could enter at any point and graduate ready to lead.
- 2023
Renamed for the marketplaces era
"Innovating Commerce Serving Communities" — recognizing that today's shopping centers are mixed-use, omnichannel, community-anchored marketplaces.
